FAQ's and Questions

Why Goat Milk Soap?

Milk based soaps have gained some popularity over the past few decades, largely due to research on milk that is teaching consumers about the way skin benefits from milk used in soaps and other skin care products. Benefits such as..-Goat Milk Soap has lactic acid which helps smooth skin by exfoliation.-Goat Milk Soap contains vitamins A and D, whose benefits include giving skin strength and suppleness..-Goat Milk Soap contains Alpha-hydroxy acids which break down the glue that holds dead skin cells together. Alpha-hydroxy acid is well known for softening and rejuvenating skin, giving it a more youthful appearance.-Goat Milk Soap has restorative vitamins, minerals and proteins.-Goat Milk Soap is gentle, even on very sensitive and delicate skin.-Goat Milk Soap has the closest pH to human skin. Our skin has an "acid mantle," a protective shield produced by the skin's own oil glands,to ensure that the skin's proper pH balance is maintained. When an alkaline substance such as commercial soaps come into contact withe the skin, the skins own proper balance is lost. The acid of the skin becomes neutralized, causing the skin to feel dry, tight and uncomfortable. Oil glands react to this over-alkalinity by secreting excess sebum or oil through the pores, to try to rebalance the pH . This results in oily, pore-clogged skin, when the excess oil is exposed to air, it hardens and darkens, causing clogged pores and blackheads, or pores that close up completely which results in pimples. Without a balanced acid mantle, skin is left exposed to the damaging effects of environmental and bacterial impurities. Correct pH balance helps skin to remain protected and healthy and breathe as it should.

Common Questions:

What ingredients do you use in your soap?

Dirty Gertie Soaps are handmade in small batches, from vegetable oil (consisting of soybean oil and cotton seed oil), coconut oil, olive oil, fresh goats milk, sodium hydroxide, essential or fragrance oils, and certain soaps contain exfoliates or clays. They are natural color and colors may slightly vary from batch to batch.

Does all soap contain Lye?

All soap is made with lye. But, soap does not contain lye. The sodium hydroxide, or lye, chemically reacts with the vegetable oils to form soap. After the "saponification" or soap making chemical process there is no lye remaining.

What is glycerin and is it good for your skin?

Glycerin is a natually occuring element in the soap making process. Many things will dissolve into glycerin easier than they do into water so it makes a good cleanser. Glycerin is "hygroscopic" which means that it absorbs water from the air. When used on your skin it attracts moisture and softens the skin.
